It is a challenge to focus on music that was released within one year of time.
Seems a bit forced to me. There are so many records that were released in
2008 that I really ripped into during 2009, so many great tunes. In 2009,
however, I was introduced to amazing tunes and also bands that I had not
heard before.

Ten songs and bands that grabbed my attention in 2009 include:

and now...a word from charlie belle

Our journey started in Philadelphia where our music lessons began when our drummer
was four, and our lead singer and guitarist was seven. We played great covers around
the city with our music school and began writing our own songs a few years later after
our lead singer attended a fantastic music camp. While all of this was happening on the
east coast, a 12 year old bass player (who was an old family friend) had been playing
the saxophone, and bass for several years, while a seven year old keyboard player
was also playing away, separately, in Austin, TX. Last summer the "Philly" 1/2 of the
band relocated to Austin and began playing gigs as Rank + File, without realizing
that there was already a really really cool (and much much older) band with the same
name. A year later we reconnected with the bass player and met our keyboard player
at camp and changed our name. We are an Austin, TX based indie rock band of four
musicians who are between 9 and 16 yrs. old. We write and perform mostly original
songs [but also a few of our favorite covers]. Our past shows include, SXSW, The
Maker Faire, The East Side Studio Tour, Jovita's, and private parties. We're even
in the documentary Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields! Yeah
we're kids, but we rock. We are Charlie Belle.
